Denmark to NYC, the compelling tale of Skagen Denmark

In the spring of 1986 Henrik Jorst and Charlotte Kjolbye sat next to each other at a corporate dinner party and they ended up falling deeply in love. Soon after, the Carlsberg brewing company, Henrik’s then employer sent him to Manhattan to run their American sales setup. Later, Charlotte flew out to join Henrik in New York and the pair got married the next year.

A Danish contact shipped Henrik some examples of his company present timepieces to determine if the pair could establish a market for them in the States. They progressed to conceiving their own unique designer watches and quickly discovered that the buyers liked their designs but they told the couple that they should sell the watches under a brand rather than offer them with corporate logo branding.
In reply the pair commissioned 800 timepieces in four stylish designs using the name Skagen Denmark. The coule set up Skagen as a result of an individual zeal for design and a strong belief that they had a gift for knowing what folks wanted – specifically, wonderfully designed, high-quality objects with Nordic style at a sensible price.
The first batch of Skagen watches soon sold out, so did another cargo and for the following year Henrik and Charlotte designed thirty new models. Charlotte had a chance meeting with a manager from a giant of a large mail order business The purchaser took a chance and highlighted the Skagen womens watches on the back of the one-off Fathers’ Day edition. The total stock sold out and the couple suddenly had a sales total of US$800,000 whilst still working out of their apartment.

Leap on to 1995 and Bloomingdales store took the Skagen Denmark watches on a trial basis. They sold out in a single day. In 1998 Inc. Mag listed Skagen Designs as being amongst the 250 fastest growing personal firms in the United States. Turnover had increased by 1200 % over five years. A new office was opened in Denmark to line up European distribution and 80 stores in Denmark started selling the watches.

By 1996 the Skagen Denmark company had grown to almost 100 employees and the brand started selling their products in the United Kingdom, followed by Germany and the Netherlands in year 2k. the year 2000. The company has gone from strength to strength since then and is now a massive concern with 160 staff and distribution in more than 60 international markets. The brand currently offers more than 250 watch designs sold in more than 5000 stores worldwide.

On the most northerly peninsula of Denmark where the North Sea and the Baltic merge can be discovered the small town of Skagen with its beautiful white sandy beaches offering cessation from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It is not surprising countless artists have been making their way here since the 1890s to capture the stark, unspoilt beauty of the sea and the sand illuminated by the very special qualities of the natural light found in this region.
